Apollo Brown & O.C. (of D.I.T.C.) - ‘Trophies2012

“Trophies” is 16 tracks of mass appeal set in motion by two different eras of hip hop’s elite. Detroit producer Apollo Brown lays the foundation, and the legendary OC constructs the vocals. Arguably, their best album respectively, “Trophies” is straight to the point hip hop; no frills, no preservatives, not even a single feature. Just OC at his finest and Apollo once again commanding no disappointments.

Today’s society is fascinated with “Trophies”. Not just a shiny cup or figurine atop a wooden platform, but the superficial earnings as a result of one’s recognition. Prestigious awards, fancy cars, nice jewelry, and beautiful women, are all coveted “Trophies” of the present day. They seem to be the preferred end result of our hard work. Everyone NEEDS to be recognized for whatever their achievement may be, in order to feel that he/she made a mark in this world. And in order for our recognition to be proper, we NEED an award, or a material object to help reassure us that we did something. But why?

Listen to the album. Enjoy the music.
Consider the real Trophies.

“I just heard OC & Apollo Brown’s new LP and it’s dope original shit - that hiphop for the people!” - DJ Premier

“This is exactly what I want… good beats… good rhymes… and a real niggaz perspective.” - Dame Dash

After dropping last year’s “I Love Haters” project in conjunction with LRG Clothing last November; Luckyiam, co-founder of the internationally infamous Living Legends returns with his new album, “Time To Get Lucky”.

The album has been in the making for the past five years, and has had quite a journey, from being mixed by one of Dr. Dre’s audio engineers to being confiscated by the Alcohol Tobacco and Firearm Agency. “Time To Get Lucky” is backed by hardhitting, electro tinged beats primarily provided by up and coming Los Angeles beatsmith, Mike Gao along with a few tracks produced by Exile and Budo (of Grieves and Budo).

Luckyiam exhibits why he is considered one of the best in his genre with skillful wordplay, detailed stories of debauchery and a delivery reminiscent of a time when skills, not internet buzz, swag, or shock value, were the currency of hip hop.

The album features guest spots from fellow crewmates, The Grouch and Scarub, along with Del the Funky Homosapien of Hieroglyphics and the multitalented singer-songwriter-MC, Lana Shea. Set your alarm for April 10, 2012 because it’s “Time To Get Lucky”

Moka Only is one of Canada’s most celebrated rappers, a former member of Platinum-selling Canadian collective Swollen Members.
Ayatollah is one of top producers on the independent hiphop scene in the US, having worked with the likes of Mos Def, Talib Kweli, Masta Ace, Ghostface, and more. Now they’re coming together for the new album Bridges, with Tollah on the boards and Moka on the mic. With Moka assuming his alter-ego Ron Contour and Tollah’s funky creations providing the backdrop, it’s an unexpected but surprisingly effective combination straight out of hip-hop fans’ fantasies.

First Serve (Posdnous + Dave of De La Soul) - ‘First Serve 2012

First they brought you ‘The Goon Time Mixtape’ blasting from a late-night house party in a Parisian suburb. Then we saw our heroes getting endless grief from Deen’s overbearing mother in the Mrs. Whitter skit. That was all just a taste of things to come from De La Soul’s Plug 1 & Plug 2 present ‘First Serve’; a dynamic hip-hop group, an album, a concept, the soundtrack to a movie that has yet to be made and a fable for our times.

‘First Serve’ is many things, but at its heart it is the story of two young boys from Queens, New York with big dreams and larger rhymes. Two friends, Deen Whitter (aka Plug 2 / Dave) and Jacob ‘Pop Life’ Barrow (aka Plug 1/ Pos), friends from seventh grade, are by their own admission, “different, but the differences seem to complement everything we do.” Their name ‘First Serve’ comes from their motto, “First come, First Serve, get what you deserve.”

After years of laying down demos and mixtapes on the hustle in the hip-hop game, we get the next instalment from their world in the form of the ‘We Made It’ skit. All the hard work has finally paid off – Jacob and Deen have hit the big time signing to Goon Time Records to become the next new thing to hit the airwaves.

Due to hit the streets worldwide on April 2nd, through Duck Down Music in North America, the ‘First Serve’ album tells the story of two dreamers in a basement struggling to start their musical career, the battles they face, through to the point that they eventually release their debut single, ‘make it big’ and their hard work and persistence finally pays off. As we know that is rarely where the story ends and the story of ‘First Serve’ is no different. Taking place in an animated world that could have been imagined by Hawley Pratt on Magic Mushrooms, the high spirited and often hilarious journey is pure old school hip-hop; skits, disco, beats, funk, quips, burns and hustlin’ all included. Ain’t nothing gonna stop us now…

the funk league - funky as usual (2012)

Escrito em 15 de Março de 2012 por Maestro

Most groups, duos, combos, trios, or other assorted musical entities don’t want to be pigeonholed. But with a name like The Funk League, there really can’t be any question as to what the group will sound like and what the music will do. There can be no mystery and there will be no deception. It will be funky and you will have to fucking deal with it. The French production duo deliver nothing but straight-up funky goodness on their debut, which strangely enough is entitled Funky As Usual.

Hugo and the Soulbrother Suspect (which oddly doesn’t sound very French) describe themselves as “rare groove connoisseurs and vinyl collectors.” This is an apt description as every sample on the release is slick and perfectly placed. These guys know their talents. They know what they like. And they stick to it. The album offers strong instrumentals, but The Funk League really excels when they have skilled MCs working magic on their creations. The talented list of collaborators includes Large Professor, Sadat X, Gift of Gab, Diamond D, and Supa. And the album kicks off a high note with the Sadat X-featured “On & On”. The Funk League and Brand Nubian member present a strong duo.

There is nothing groundbreaking here. Instead, The Funk League deliver a friendly release of old-school hip hop goodness that features fine guest spots and well-placed, well-researched beats. These guys are obviously students of vinyl and they demonstrate this on classic cuts like “On & On” and “MC3”.

Bleubird - Cannonball (2012)

The presence of David Morrell, John Rambo, and Sylvester Stallone in my heart has always provided me with the courage to carry on through the darkness. To be ridiculous in the face of poverty. To take giant, blind leaps forward into the unknown. This new album is special to me, so I wanted to make something special, personal, and silly…like me. I’ve “employed” a pack of feral children I found wandering near a dumpster in back of a “WINGS” on Ft. Lauderdale beach. Their small, deft fingers have been working away for weeks assembling TEN of these LIMITED EDITION machine-gun USB albums. A little rice+beans goes a long way with this group… they even made this gorgeous mock-up graphic! Each machine gun will come equipped with a 2GB bayonet USB loaded with the complete album, artwork, and lyric PDF. As well as a personalized video from yours truly… addressed to you, my lovely supporter/enabler. A wise woman once told me that loving me was like trench warfare. Arm yourselves.
